What we run

Our coordinator is a Sonoff ZBDongle-E (EFR32MG21 chip, EmberZNet) connected to a Home Assistant server via USB — with a 1 m USB 2.0 extension cable, which matters more than most people think.

Our real-world findings

The ZBDongle-E is the safe default. EFR32MG21, external SMA antenna, +20 dBm, and the Ember adapter in Zigbee2MQTT is no longer experimental — it’s the recommended path. The community support and firmware updates are the best in the category.

USB placement beats chip marketing. The cheap fix that helped our network more than any hardware upgrade: moving the dongle 1–2 m away from the server on a USB 2.0 extension. USB 3.0 ports and the server’s own Wi-Fi genuinely interfere with the 2.4 GHz band. Buy the cable before a more expensive stick.

Ethernet/PoE only when placement is the problem. The SLZB-06 (now mostly sold as the Mg24 with the newer EFR32MG24 silicon) wins when the radio must live away from the machine — hallway, utility closet, garage. It doesn’t magically fix a thin mesh; it fixes where the coordinator sits.

The P still has a loyal crowd. The ZBDongle-P (TI CC2652P, Z-Stack) is the most battle-tested USB path of all. It’s the right pick if you’re already on Z-Stack today or you value the sheer volume of community knowledge around it.

Three mistakes to avoid

  1. Plugging the dongle straight into a USB 3.0 port — or worse, a hub. Use a 1–2 m USB 2.0 extension cable.
  2. Buying a stronger radio instead of adding router devices. Zigbee is a mesh; mains-powered bulbs and plugs as routers fix range. No coordinator cures a thin mesh.
  3. Shopping by device-count spec. Real capacity depends on mesh health (router density and placement), not the number on the box.

What about the SkyConnect?

The Home Assistant SkyConnect (EFR32MG21) did great things for this category — we documented that in an earlier guide. It’s been discontinued by Nabu Casa. Its successor is the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 (MG24, $49/€45): official hardware, but it runs Zigbee or Thread — one at a time, not both.
