Short answer: For most Home Assistant users, Zigbee is the better choice in 2026 — more device options, lower prices and a bigger ecosystem. Z-Wave still wins where range and network congestion matter, especially in dense homes.
We run both protocols live in our own smart home (46+ Zigbee devices and a separate Z-Wave test network), so this comparison is based on real-world use, not spec sheets.
Why this matters
Your protocol choice locks in your entire ecosystem. You cannot mix Zigbee and Z-Wave devices in one mesh without a second coordinator, so it’s worth getting this right before buying your first sensors.

Our real-world findings
Zigbee wins on device choice and price. In our network the same door sensor costs half the price in Zigbee, and we had dozens of brands to choose from (Sonoff, Aqara, IKEA, Tuya).
Z-Wave wins on robustness. Every Z-Wave device must pass certification, so quality is more consistent. The sub-GHz frequency also means no Wi-Fi interference — relevant if you live in a crowded apartment building.
The reliability myth is outdated. Older advice said “Zigbee is unreliable.” That was mostly true for first-gen devices and bad mains routers. With Zigbee 3.0, modern coordinators (like the Sonoff E dongle we use) and a couple of mains-powered router devices, our Zigbee network has been rock solid for months — after a proper migration, not a single device dropped.
Which should you buy?

The bottom line
Both protocols are mature and stable in 2026. If we had to pick one for a new build today, it would be Zigbee — the ecosystem, price and Home Assistant integration simply outweigh Z-Wave’s certification advantage for the vast majority of users.
